Kobayashi Issa’s haiku monument is located on the grounds of Fukujyusan Fumonin Senenji Temple, a branch temple of Jodo Sect’s head temple, Chionin Temple.
Since Muneaki Yamazaki established his hermitage here, many haiku poets have visited the area. Kobayashi Issa was one of them, and he often stayed at this temple, relying on the priest Seiyo (haiku name Gobai), who was also a student of Issa’s. One New Year’s Day, Issa visited this temple.
One New Year’s Day, Issa wrote a haiku poem “ganjitsuya saranihatagoto omohoezu.” The meaning of the haiku was, “I have always received such good hospitality at this inn that I don’t think it is a traveler’s inn.
