Toilet House is a public toilet built on Ibukijima Island during the 2013 Setouchi International Art Festival.
The design was inspired by the fact that in traditional houses on Ibukijima, toilets are usually located in a separate water room off the main house. The way light shines through the slits in the ceiling and walls changes with the time of day, and the shadows it creates inside the house are reminiscent of the maze of alleys on the island.
From the islanders’ point of view, it is a natural landscape, and the work incorporates the island’s character.
