Takao Senju Kannondo is located in Onohara-cho and is familiarly known locally as “Takao no Okan-san”. Inside, there is a seated wooden statue of the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, said to have been created in the late Heian period (794-1185), and designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Onohara-cho in 1983. Since the shrine enshrines Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, many local students preparing for entrance exams and job hunting visit the shrine every year to pray for success.
In August, “Okansan Shichitoko Mairi” is held at seven locations in the town, and local people offer entertainment from early in the morning on the day of the visit. In the precincts of the temple, there is a monument to the haiku poem by Basho, “Tama to karu naiya yasode murete sappaneru koyo (Tears, dyes, and scattered autumn leaves)”.
