Ippogu, located within Mishima Shrine, is dedicated to Kononahasakuyahime no Mikoto, the god of safe childbirth.
According to one legend, when Empress Jingu gave birth to Emperor Ojin, she placed the spirit of the god on her belly and gave birth safely, attracting worshippers from within and outside the prefecture to pray for safe delivery. When praying for a safe delivery, visitors select a stone under the floor of the Ippogu to take home with them.
When the child is born, the name of the child and the date of birth are written on the stone and the stone is returned to the same place. At that time, a new stone is added to the stone and the two stones are returned.
The new stone is to share the happiness of a safe birth with the next person. Numerous ema (votive picture tablet) votive tablets are dedicated in the precincts of the shrine, and many stones with the names of children born in good health can be seen under the floor. This shrine is very popular among the locals.
