Awai Shrine is one of the 24 shrines in the Sanuki Engi-shiki, and is one of the most venerable shrines in Sanuki, having been widely revered for over 1,000 years.
In the past, it was also called “Karita-daimyojin” (Great Myojin of Karita) because of its vast area of deities as the general guardian of Karita-gun (almost all of present-day Kanonji City and a part of Mitoyo City).
During the Tensho era (1615-1626), when Nagasogabe of Tosa invaded Fujime Castle, the shrine was burned in a military fire and the old records were lost. Currently, approximately 3,000 hydrangea plants adorn the shrine grounds, and the shrine is visited by many worshippers from within and outside of the prefecture throughout June as a hydrangea shrine.
