Every June, the grounds and back slope of Awai Shrine, a famous hydrangea viewing spot in the prefecture, are decorated with 3,000 blue, purple, pink, and other colorful hydrangeas in about 50 varieties. Since 1987, the “Hydrangea Festival” has been held annually in June to coincide with the blooming of the hydrangeas. The festival includes a Shinto ritual and Kagura (Shinto music and dance), followed by a bazaar, belly dancing, and various other events.
