Wada / Tanono Rain Dance|Traditional event that has continued for about 400 years

Two rain dance traditions in Kanonji City are both designated as Intangible Folk Cultural Properties by Kagawa Prefecture. The “Wada Amagoi Dance” in Wada, Toyohama Town is said to have originated about 400 years ago, when Satsuma Houshi (a Buddhist priest) introduced the song and dance and performed “Amagoi” (begging for rain).
“Tanono Amagoi Odori” in the Tanono district of Gogo, Onohara-cho, is another dance that was introduced by Satsuma priests 400 years ago during the Keicho era. It is a simple dance in which a singer called “Keigo” leads a circle of drummers wearing yukata (light cotton kimono), white tasuki, hand helmets, and leg bands, children wearing hanagasa (hats with hats), and adults in braided hats, all dancing to the accompaniment of songs.
